There have been many, many jokes made about people who are transgender. To me some are really funny (like these two clips from The Colbert Report) and then some are just cruel.

I read a lot of posts on the web in response to jokes made by TV shows and it seems like a lot of people, trans or not, don’t like any jokes made about people who are trans. I thought Colbert saying rearranging stuff down there like a Mr. Potatoe head was pretty funny and when he was talking about how cows now have so many hormones that they are members of the transgender community I was cracking up. I read though, that someone commented “Yes, because trans* people are just like cows, right? Screw you. I expected better of Colbert.” (http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/411671/april-03-2012/lfbt-colbology)

So I’m wondering if anyone else things its ok to laugh at jokes aimed at people who are transgender? I certainly do, and do laugh at some jokes (to me it really depends on the context). Like I’ve even had family and friends joke with me about it and its ok because its in good fun. Especially when I first was coming out to people there were some jokes that were funny and they really helped to kinda make the process easier and less stressful.

Wednesday

Today I had an appointment with my therapist and as often that happens usually after I have a session I sometimes feel a little down just because of the work that was done during and bringing up strong emotions so I generally treat myself to a cappy (cappuccino blast from DD/BR) but today I had to make an extra stop at one of my favorite stores, Advance Auto Parts Smile with tongue out

During my therapy session we were discussing self esteem, and most notably, my lack of it so leaving the session I was feeling extra critical of myself, extra not confident but I needed to get a few things at Advance or else my car wasn’t going to be too happy so I kinda walk in, force myself to hold my head up, and go straight around all the isles in the back over to the fluids, grab what I needed and head to the register. I should include that I am a regular customer here both because I love cars and because I tend to have bad luck with cars. So I head to the register and one of the normal guys that work there is like, “yeah I saw you sneak in here” and smiled, just kinda joking with me and he was like, do you need help with your car? So I said yeah, kinda…I’m not sure what is really wrong with it. Then the manager came over and said I’ll take ya over here ma’am, how have you been? Haven’t seen you in a while. So were making small talk about my car but it was just really nice to go into a place, especially when I was having a horrible day and just have people be nice to me. They probably had no idea how I feel or what kinda day it was but that little interaction I had with them, however small it was, made a big difference. It didn’t fix everything for sure, but made me smile when I was feeling really down.

I think that really goes to show how it is important to always treat people with respect and kindness because you never know what or how they are feeling and a small interaction with you could just bring a smile to someone’s face.

So, yeah… Advance Auto Parts… at least that one… is def one of my favorite stores Smile

Tablet Confusion??? :/

My love/hate relationship with my netbook is starting to become more hate because lately it has been giving me trouble when I’m trying to charge it. On top of that it has gotten really slow and freezes a lot. Sad smile

I’m going to be getting a new desktop PC soon but I would really like a tablet to replace my netbook.

A few reasons on getting a netbook…. a few of my textbooks are e-books and using the kindle app on a tablet, I think, would be easier than on my netbook, I like to do homework outside of my apartment. either on the patio or a park or coffee shop, even a restaurant so something portable with lots of battery life would be awesome, I use my netbook while I’m in bed and I think a tablet might be a little more comfy when I’m talking to friends online or browsing facebook, and lastly, they look pretty cool Smile

On my netbook currently I create and edit microsoft and openoffice documents, browse the internet, use yahoo/skype/msn etc, windows live writer, and also in one of my jobs I use my webcam to talk to clients. I login through the company’s website and I think the page loads with java and connects to my webcam so I would need the tablet to do that. Also, I would like use an external web camera, like the Microsoft LifeCam Studio. Gaming would be a great option as well as apps.

I’ve kinda narrowed my search down to two tablets so far… The first is the Asus TF201. I really like this tablet because of the power of the newer processor and it’s ability to do some gaming. Also it runs the newer version of Android so I would have access to tons and tons of apps. It also has an optional dock which extends the battery life and transforms it into a netbook. The things I am unsure about with this tablet is if it can run microsoft office or open office. I definitely need to be able to create word documents, powerpoint, excel, live writer, and outlook. Also I hear it can run flash and browse the web like a normal computer so hopefully I can use it with my company’s website and their video conferencing software but can I connect an external cam like the LifeCam to it to get a better image?

The second tablet I’m looking at is the Lenovo Ideapad 06517HU Tablet Netbook. This tablet runs windows so it should work with office and I should be able to use it with an external webcam, I think? Since it runs windows and not android I don’t really have access to any apps so that’s kind of a bummer :/ but with windows I can do everything that an app can do just in a different way.

So if anyone knows anything about tablets or computers that can give me some advice I would def appreciate it!

l_896012bb124d448c9109e5c52cf9bef6That is a picture of me from before… before I started my transition, before I stopped living for others, before I stopped being so depressed I didn’t know what to do, before I started my new life.

While a lot has changed since this picture was taken, much remains the same. My feelings have changed, which is to say I am happier now. Although my beliefs, attitudes, likes and dislikes, are all pretty much the same. Of course there are some things now that I am able to do more  than before, like get all dressed up and cute (or try to be Smile with tongue out) and go out to a club or on a date.  I still like sports, as I did before, I still like exercise, being outdoors, cars (Mustang is coming soon! Open-mouthed smile)

For me when  I started my transition I didn’t want to try and emulate being a woman, I just am a woman who happens to like certain things and has a certain style about her.

One area I think transgendered people who transition sometimes kinda hurt themselves in is by trying to reinvent themselves or completely change everything about them. Which is understandable because a lot of us have had to become really good at acting like someone who is completely opposite of who we truly are. So it is easy when transitioning to say ok, well, here is my opportunity and I am going to completely change everything. Which in the end may not make you as happy as you think.

So for me, all that stuff I did in the past ( good and bad) is still a part of me and has shaped me. I have always been a woman, just not able to show it on the outside, so it makes sense that I am not totally changing myself just because I transitioned.

I think this is interesting topic and I would love to hear from other trans people, or non trans, and hear what your thoughts are. Smile

Most things that ask for you to identify your gender usually have only two options, M or F. Sometimes though, there is an option for transgender or I’ve also seen TS/TV/TG/CD… especially on some dating sites. I always pick F because that is what I am, I am female. Even if there is a section for transgender, which I am and have little problem admitting it, I will choose F because to me, transgender is not my gender, female is my gender. I sometimes get questions though, like, “why don’t you say your transgender when there is an option for it”? or “why are you trying to deceive people”? I always explain to them that female is my gender and not transgender but some just don’t seem to understand. They say I should be comfortable with who I am, which I am for the most part most of the time, and it’s not like I’m trying to deliberately hide being transgender its just that I want to be identified as female.

I thought it would be interesting to get other takes on this, transgender or not. What do you think? If you are transgender, do you put F or do you put trans?

Also, I should probably point out that I normally tell someone, like if its on a dating site, within 2 or 3 e-mails that I am trans, so I’m not trying to hide or deceive them.
